How to celebrate Mother's Day

Thursday, May 17, 2007

I am back. I removed my blog for awhile because of so many other commitments. But I truly miss this form of communication. So please let me know your thoughts.

Mother's Day was an amazing day for me. Not only did I get to share it with loved ones, but I started the day with a most amazing Spiritual discussion. I had to wake up early to participate but it was worth it. The speaker suggested that mothers represent the outflow of love in the world and that Mother's Day is a way to honor this contribution by Mom. But you needn't be a mom to be a vehicle for Love. It is really the way we are all built. Deep down inside of each of us there is a need to send out love and watch it transform others. We can't help ourselves.

But I have to say it is the Mother in me who feels the Love the most and who also feels the rejection of my love. For example, today I watched my neighbor's children walking back from a swim at the river. The three teenagers looked so young and happy and delighted with themselves. The sun was shining and their wet heads glistened in the sunshine. They had no cares, off from school early for some teacher inservice day, they were out for a day of play.

So why did this lovely scene make me sad? I thought of all of the times over the last 20 some years I watched my own beautiful children as they walked back from a day at the river. I remembered their carefree attitudes and their beatific smiles. But that is no more. My children are not allowed to go to the river without being harassed by the neighbors. These very neighbors who send their children to the beach to play have sued me and harassed me and mine in an effort to keep us from using the river to play. They have videotaped and photographed us. They have called the police. They have screamed at us. They have built fences over the river bank, into the sand and even into the waters of the Columbia River in an effort to keep us from using our legal access to the river. It has been awful to watch the hatred spill forth from these people and be helpless to stop them from harming my family.

And the sadness is not even so much for the loss of innocence for my children and myself, but also for the neighbor children. They can't play with the kids next door, because their parents have sued their mother. And even though their parents lost the lawsuit and my family has the right to go to the river, is their pleasure in that victory? I would rather share the joy with the children and share my neighbor's joy watching her brood enjoy a beautiful Spring day.
